apple core skulls

It's the season for apples. Maybe you've been packing apple rabbits in your bento lately. Well, here's something to do with the cores -- apple core skulls! I think it would be a great decorative addition to a Halloween or Day of the Dead bento.

Coffin bento

So these turned out a little...plain? No, simple..mmm, oh yeah...BORING! I have to say that they looked WAY cooler in my head! I was thinking I should add some gravestones or spiderwebs, but I guess I just wasnt "feeling" it this morning. Oh well, I guess its still better than a PB&J and a bag of chips:)

The coffins are actually spam musubi. There are two mini eggrolls in there along with prociutto wrapped asparagus, orange slices, edamame and some tomatoes for color.

Here are the boxes. I have been favoring my one tiered boxes lately. The kids dont eat that much so the two tiered ones hold a little too much for them. Plus, they are easier to pack.

Frankenstein bento

Still going with the Halloween theme.

Today I made Frankensteins out of avocados and carrot jack o lanterns all on a bed of rice.

In the top tier I made grilled steak, breaded chicken nuggets, asparagus wrapped in prociutto, sliced pickles, tomatoes, and a lemon slice for color.

Here are the boxes.

New bento boxes!!

Just got a new package from Sugar Charms today! (Because enough is NEVER enough!)

Here is what it looked inside the box.

Part of the "charm" of Sugar Charms, for me, is the packaging. I love how every single item is wrapped in pink tissue over bubble wrap, and has a brown satin ribbon around it. (I am a little fanatical about gift wrapping too!)
And here are my newest treasures! Cute, right?

Brown bunny and chicken wings

Today I made bunnies.

On Devin's bunny, I used black sesame seeds for eylashes. The bunny is made out of soy sauce seasoned rice. There is half of an egg with kamaboko flowers, fish cake tempura, yellow tomatoes, sausage flowers, and an edamame skewer are also in this tier.
Bryce's box has the same, but I left off the eyelashes.
The second tier has grilled mackeral, more tempura, edamame and tomatoes. There is soy sauce in the apple container.
These are the bento boxes I used.
Because they were filled pretty full, I used furoshiki to tie them up securely.
This was tuesdays lunch.
The first tier has chicken drummettes wrapped in decorative foil with a soft hawaiian sweet roll.
Second tier has celery, tomatoes, asian pears, and ranch dressing in the little cup.
These are the bento boxes used.
I wrapped up the blue box because it was full.
This was Rick's lunch. Tri tip, sauteed cremini mushrooms, israeli couscous, celery and tomatoes.

my new favorite vegetable

is the romanesco. It's a brasica, very similar to a cauliflower in taste and texture.

fun veg

It looks like fractals, pine cones, mountains. As a kid, I was weird and actually liked veggies, but I would've eaten these just because they're so unusual looking.

Eat them raw with veggie dip, or use them cooked. We made broccoli and romanesco in cream sauce and had it with pasta. For bento, I sauteed halved cocktail weenies (ends cut so they look like flowers) with the romanesco. The flavors work well together.

jack-o-lantern bento

Today I tried a halloween themed bento. The kids liked it!

I made the onigiri with masago (fish roe) and nori. He has a brocolli stem.

Next to him were cherry tomatoes, grilled ahi in the silicone cup, miso pork, and a fried mandoo underneath him.
